Statement from Manhattan District Attorney candidate Diana Florence on the violent subway assault on Tuesday that resulted in the death of Nicola Tanzi:
“Tuesday’s tragedy was preventable. The suspect, David Mazariegos, had a long record of violent crime. In June, he was arrested in Manhattan after punching a man in the face. The NYPD did their job, but under Alvin Bragg’s policies and the bail reform he has supported, Mazariegos was released on just $1,000 bail. Now, only months later, he’s accused of beating a man to death in Downtown Brooklyn. And when police arrested him again, he was caught carrying a sword through Times Square.
“Manhattan deserves better. We deserve safety. We deserve justice. Nicola Tanzi didn’t have to die.
“I am a proud lifelong Democrat, and I’ve spent 25 years as a prosecutor fighting to keep New Yorkers safe. I’m running for District Attorney because enough is enough — we are not safe in Alvin Bragg’s Manhattan, and it’s time to restore accountability and common sense to our justice system.”
