Da Homeless Hero Shams DaBaron endorses DA Candidate Diana Florence

New York, NY (April 28, 2021) Today, Diana Florence for New York is proud to announce Shams DaBaron a.k.a. “Da Homeless Hero” has endorsed her campaign for  Manhattan District Attorney. DaBaron joins a steady drumbeat of endorsements lining  up behind Florence that includes several labor unions and community leaders.

“Diana Florence is the only candidate who stood by the homeless men at the Lucerne,  and it’s why I’m endorsing her for Manhattan District Attorney,” said Shams DaBaron. “Diana knows our issues from the horrors of congregant shelters, to breaking the  struggles of homelessness, displacement, and incarceration— traumas on top of  traumas. I’m proud to call her a friend and a fighter in our journey towards permanent  housing and human respect.”

“I am thrilled to have the support of my dear friend, Shams Da Baron, and be a part of  his hero’s journey,” said Diana Florence, candidate for Manhattan DA. “Together, we  will rebuild the Manhattan DA’s Office to focus on ‘Crimes of Power’ like housing fraud,  corruption, and gun trafficking, rather than crimes of poverty. By working holistically to  break the cycle between incarceration and homelessness rather than wielding the blunt  instrument of the criminal justice system, we can ensure that every New Yorker is safe at home, safe at work, and safe on the street.”

Florence is committed to ending the cycle of arrest, Rikers, repeat by taking into  account addiction challenges, mental health issues, and systematic racism when  dealing with crimes of poverty. To do so, Florence has developed a restorative re-entry  plan, called Pre-Entry, as part of her Various Interests for Long Lasting Growth and  Engagement (V.I.L.L.A.G.E) vision as well as a plan to reinvest asset forfeiture funds to create opportunities for young people, so they don’t fall into cycles of crime and housing  instability.
